Ogeechee River
Starting in Greene County near Interstate 20, the Ogeechee River flows southeast through Warren, Hancock, Washington, Glascock, Jefferson, Burke, Emanuel, Jenkins, Screven, Bulloch, Bryan and Effingham Counties before dumping into the Atlantic Ocean at Ossabaw Sound. It is one of Georgia's last free flowing rivers and has been relatively unaltered by development along its banks. The Ogeechee starts as an alluvial stream with raised banks in the piedmont area. It then slowly changes to a wide blackwater stream with forested swamps on either side of the main channel in the coastal plain.
Canoeing down the river can be a pleasant way to spend a summer afternoon.
Boaters should always use caution and check weather and water conditions before going out on the river.
