About the Great American Cleanup
The Great American Cleanup is an annual event held in over 15,000 communities across the country. Started in 1999, the Great American Cleanup brings community members together each spring to cleanup roadways, neighborhoods and rivers, improve buildings and structures, and landscape natural areas.
Everyone in Bulloch County is encouraged to participate in the Great American Cleanup each spring. Teams typically consist of families, neighbors, friends, co-workers, church groups, volunteer organizations and others and can range in size from two people to fifty. Projects can be selected by the team or from a list of priority projects identified by Keep Bulloch Beautiful.
Each team is provided with the tools and materials they need to complete their project. In addition, Keep Bulloch Beautiful gives every volunteer a Great American Cleanup t-shirt and other free goodies.
On the day of the main event, everyone gathers at the previously agreed upon meeting place. For most litter cleanup projects, the meeting places will be the following:
Statesboro: 8 a.m. Honey Bowen Building located at 1 Max Lockwood Drive
Register: 8 a.m. Register Community Center
Brooklet: 8 a.m. Brooklet Town Hall
Portal: 8 a.m. Portal Town Hall
Some projects, such as large scale building improvements, landscaping, or litter cleanups in extreme corners of the county, will require that the team set up a meeting point at the project location. A few members from the team can come to the nearest event meeting point to collect t-shirts and materials for the rest of the group.
For example, a group cleaning up the banks of the Ogeechee River near Rocky Ford would want to have their team meet out at the river. Then a few representatives from the team will go to Portal Town Hall on the morning of the main event to collect t-shirts and other materials.
