Litter has yet to become a resolved problem throughout the Bulloch County, Statesboro area as well as across the state and country. Truck beds with unsecured loads and loose debris along with careless motorists that toss cigarette butts and empty containers can create hazardous road conditions. This type of litter can influence visitors and residents to have a negative impression of this area that in turn results in a negative affect on the area’s economy. Environmental impacts on water quality and wildlife also occur due to litter.
In August of 2007, a team of Keep Bulloch Beautiful volunteers conducted an inspection of the county of the annual litter index. Each area is repeatedly inspected annually to identify problem areas that need more attention and areas of improvement. The volunteers did report improvements, although reported areas that have worsened over the year. The areas of downtown Brooklet, Portal, and Register have all improved due to the efforts of KBB and the local communities.
The areas that need more improvements are those surrounding Georgia Southern University, Wal-Mart, Statesboro Mall, and the dumpster sites located in the rural areas. Keep Bulloch Beautiful and county officials will work with these locations to improve their appearance and reduce the litter year round.
One of the many efforts to improve these sites is the Great American Cleanup that will take place in Bulloch County the week of April 19-26, 2008. Keep Bulloch Beautiful is welcoming any volunteers who would like to help with this beautification. Online registration begins Feb.1, 2008 at www.keepbullochbeautiful.org.
