Bulloch County recycles.

Amanda's home recycling system.

Amanda Sikes, a senior Finance major at Georgia Southern University, has been living in Statesboro for four years.  She has two recycling bins set up in her kitchen; one for plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and glass bottles and one for paper.

“I didn’t always recycle, but I started to about a year ago when I realized how much waste my roommates and I were producing and how much of it could actually be recycled and reused.”

Amanda explains that almost half of the waste her household was producing could have been recycled.  She believes everyone should participate in the act of recycling, especially college students because of the amount of paper they use throughout the school year, not to mention soda bottles and cans.

“It’s easy to do and you are only helping our environment in the long run.  I encourage my friends to pick up the habit all the time!”

James' home recycling system.

James Lawson, a graduate of Georgia Southern University, has lived in Statesboro for almost six years.  James has always been conscience of the environment and an avid recycler.

“We only have one earth, why not treat it with respect,” says James.

James has a recycling bin set up in his kitchen for plastic, glass and aluminum items.  He purposely set it next to the trash can to encourage friends to throw the recyclable items in the proper bin, not the trash can.

“I constantly encourage my friends to recycle and have turned many onto the act.  Some people just need a little education on the importance of it,” explains James.
